Hero to the Rescue

Dressed as Spiderman, Maroubra resident Tony Barbaro has become a superhero to sick children as he races around Sydney for charity.
Mr Barbaro has run the City2Surf as Spiderman for three years to raise money for Bear Cottage, a children’s hospice based in Manly.
He was the first costumed runner to finish the 14km race in 2005, only to be beaten by Batman and Robin last year.
Mr Barbaro, who also takes part in the Maroubra Fun Run, has now recruited Superman and the devil to join him. His son Leonardo, 6, and daughter Sabrina, 9, have strapped on their running shoes, and costume.
Mr Barbaro said he decided to run for charity when he was doing a self-expression and leadership program. It required him to take on a project that would force him out of his comfort zone and also make a difference.
Mr Barbaro said running as his athletic alter ego was hard work, but the supportive atmosphere got him through. “My experience is you have got a cheer squad for the whole 14km and they yell out ‘Go Spidey!’ and the kids stand on the side and give me high-fives,” he said. “It doesn’t do my times much good, but it’s so much fun.”
On August 10, Mr Barbaro will run the City2Surf for The Think Kids Challenge, a fundraising activity for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Donations to the charity can be made on 9845 3364.
The story can also be seen on the Southern Courier website.
